Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)

What is dysmenorrhea?

Dysmenorrhea means painful periods. Primary dymenorrhea are periods that happen to be painful, whilst secondary dysmenorrha refers to period pain caused by certain reproductive disorders such as endometriosis, fibroids, tumours, cysts, cervical stenosis. The pain is thought to be caused by uterine contractions and ishaemia (impaired blood flow to the uterus) brought on by the secretion of prostaglandins by the endometrium.

Diagnosis and treatment of dysmenorrhea with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine

According to Chinese Medicine, pain occurs when there is a blockage of Qi or energy. This can further be associated with Cold in the Uterus, an obstruction of the blood in the Uterus, or, if the pain is dull, with a Deficiency of Blood.

Acupuncture is very effective in treating painful periods. In a randomized study of 43 women with primary dysmenorrhea, it was found that 91% of the women experienced a reduction in the pain after receiving acupuncture treatment.
